Theyyam is a ritual performance art form specific to Kerala, and it's rarely attempted in painted form at all, let alone at this scale. This diptych holds two distinct Theyyam styles side by side — one in red and silver with elaborate beaded headwork, one in green, gold, and red with a towering crown — each rendered with real patience in the ornamental patterning that makes Theyyam makeup and costume so distinctive. At 36 by 48 inches, in mixed medium on stretched canvas, this is the largest and most ambitious work Leela Rani has made for the collection, and the clear flagship piece.
