Sound & Custom Wall Art

Raga / Resonance — the shape of your favorite music, carved into a wall panel that also fixes your room's sound

Raga / Resonance turns a piece of music into a physical object. You choose an Indian raga — or honestly, any music you love — and its structure is used to generate the flowing shape of a carved wood panel. It looks like frozen sound. And it's not only sculpture: the panel is a working acoustic treatment that makes a music room or home theater sound better.

To understand the concept you have to understand what a raga is. A raga is the melodic framework of Indian classical music — a set of notes with its own rules and, crucially, its own "unique melodic personality" [Raga, Wikipedia]. Each raga is meant to stir a specific emotion, or rasa, and many are tied to a particular time of day or season; performing a raga at its right hour is believed to bring out its full emotional effect [Raga, EBSCO]. Raga Marwa, for instance, is a sunset raga that carries a mood of longing or separation [Marva (raga), Wikipedia]. So when this piece translates a raga into a shape, it's translating a specific feeling and a specific time of day into wood.

The sound-improving side is real engineering, not a slogan. The gold standard for scattering sound in studios and concert halls is the Schroeder diffuser, invented by physicist Manfred Schroeder in the 1970s. He worked out that a row of wells of different depths, with the depths set by a number-theory sequence (the quadratic residue sequence), scatters sound evenly across a room instead of bouncing it straight back [The Quadratic Residue Diffuser, Stanford CCRMA; Diffusion (acoustics), Wikipedia]. That scattering breaks up harsh echoes while keeping a room lively rather than dead [Understanding Diffusion, GIK Acoustics]. Raga / Resonance uses that same principle: the "musical" shape doubles as a diffuser, so the panel that shows your favorite raga is also quietly tuning the room it hangs in.

How it works

  • You pick a raga (or any music); its structure generates the flowing carved shape — computer-assisted, then hand-finished.
  • The same carved surface works as an acoustic diffuser, scattering sound to reduce echo and harshness in a music room or theater.
  • Carved wood with brass detailing.

Why commission this one, and who it’s for

This is for a musician, a serious listener, or anyone with a song that means everything to them — a first dance, a raga a grandparent sang, the piece they fell in love to. It's the only wall panel that is simultaneously your music made visible and a genuine studio-grade acoustic tool. Perfect for a home studio, a listening room, or a music teacher's space.

Materials & craft

Carved wood with brass detail; the geometry is generated from the music you choose and refined to work as a sound diffuser.
